Openjdk uses high mem/cpu and JRE uses low mem/cpu? Doing this wrong?

I installed the opensource jdk and tried using it for a website i frequent : lajollasurf.org and found that on opening it 40% of memory was taken and sparadic full CPU usage was constant while browsing the sight. I then installed JRE and found memory at 4% and cpu at only 3%. Is that typical or am I completely missing something?

Note: I usually go to that website and check buoys by going to Weather>Buoys>Northern California
