remap dead "." period key [solved]

My laptop period key "." stopped working.

I want to remap an unused windows key to period "."

Using xev shows keycode 155 (keysysm 0xff67, menu) for the windows key.
I believe keycode 60 is for period.

At this point I'm kinda confused though, because showkey says windows key is 127, period is 52.

how use xmodmap to remap right side windows key to period?

Re: remap dead "." period key [solved]

Why not try both? Also, I believe that you are trying to remap the menu key, not the windows key.

keycode 155 = U002E U003E
keycode 127 = U002E U003E

Re: remap dead "." period key [solved]

Ok,

First thanks for your reply Stebalien. Tried your fix, but bash didn't recognise keycode command.
Thanks for pointing out about menu key, you were right.

I was looking for a quick fix before I had to leave for work but it didn't happen. Now that I have more time I looked into it a bit more.

Here's what I did to fix it. Following this part of the Arch WIKI on xmodmap https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xmodmap#Editing

Extract your actual table of keycodes in a file (here: .xmod)
xmodmap -pke > ~/.xmod
Now you can edit .xmod. The new .xmod get loaded by
xmodmap ~/.xmod

This gave me an easily readable list of all the keyboard codes on my system.

Opened .xmod and copied details of #60 to # 135
Tested it out by running xmodmap ~/.xmod

Next, to get it to autorun at login, I tried to add the command to  XFCE4 settings and startup.
Didn't work.  After looking at the first several lines in the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc script.

#!/bin/sh

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

# merge in defaults and keymaps

if [ -f $sysresources ]; then

    xrdb -merge $sysresources
fi

if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi

if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then

    xrdb -merge "$userresources"

fi

if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then
    xmodmap "$usermodmap"
fi

# start some nice programs

Saved a copy of .xmod as ~/.Xmodmap

Put another copy of it into /etc/X11/xinit directory, again as .Xmodmap

Rebooted, all is good! I'm sure needed only one .Xmodmap in one of the 2 locations, but not sweating that.

Now how will I deal with this if I have to boot directly to shell?
Guess I'll have to plug a keyboard in again for that.

Edit: to add info

After a bit more reading and trial / error............
Either one of these 3 commands will remap the menu key to period.

xmodmap -e "keycode 135 = U002E U003E"

xmodmap -e "keycode 135 = 0x2e"

xmodmap -e "keycode 135 = period greater period greater"

And these will return it to menu.

xmodmap -e "keycode 135 = 0xff67"

xmodmap -e "keycode 135 = Menu NoSymbol Menu"

The numbers mix up in my first post was my error.....
