[SOLVED] GIMP doesn't open .jpg files

Hello, I installed GIMP with pacman on my arch x64 and noticed it can neither open .jpg files nor save images as .jpg. First thing that came to my mind is that some codec or plugin is missing but I can't find anything. And as my image viewer is able to open .jpg files I think, it's a gimp specific problem. Hope you can help me.

What happens when you from a terminal do:

gimp /path/to/your/picture.jpg

?

It also tells me "Opening '/home/silver/Pictures/Wallpapers/X-Files.jpg' failed: Unknown file type" ..same happens when I try to open it by right clicking and selecting gimp.

Maybe the jpgs are corrupt. Can you view the jpgs normally in any image viewer?

Run

file /home/silver/Pictures/Wallpapers/X-Files.jpg

and post the output.

As I said, my image viewer is able to open them.

Sorry, all I can say is gimp works fine with files that are identified as 'JPEG image data, JFIF standard 1.01' on my i686 (other "types" of JPEG work too).

I have no idea how file associations work and I found http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1738721
That's all I can do.

@Psylver - Does /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/file-jpeg exist on your system? If not, reinstall GIMP.

That's all I can do.

I tried the solution suggested in the thread (emptying the package manager chache and reinstalling gimp aswell as installing "gimp-ufraw") but it didn't help.

"file-jpeg" exists in that folder..

They were not talking about the package manager cache, but about gimp-related settings:

I finally fixed the problem by uninstalling everything that referenced GIMP, deleting all of the settings folders

..which I tried and which didn't work.

I now also tried deleting the folder in my /home directory and reinstalling it. Still no chance to open .jpg files.

Well, I somehow got it fixed by trying different things. If anyone else has this problem or will have it in future:

 sudo pacman -Syyf gimp gegl

fixed it for me.
