1) How do i make KDM have an actual background and not a black one?, i mean something that is consistent with the KDE loading desktop screen? I installed kdeartwork-wallpapers after the first install and start of kde and it didn't correct itself.
2) Crashes everywhere?
3) Why does arch install kernel 2.6.39 when theres a new and stable one?

You mean linux 3.0? It's still in testing, but you can use it if you want.

There's an additional package, kde-wallpapers, you might want to check out. They split it from the other packages to save space. Not sure if it's necessary but I've seen other people suggest it for the same reason.
As far as crashing... KDE 4.7 was released like four days ago. Wouldn't be surprised if there's still some little bugs left here and there. I don't know much more on that subject, though.
This isn't the signature you're looking for... Move along...

Re 1 - you can set the kdm background in systemsettings - login screen (got to call it up with kdesu though). If that doesn't help edit /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc
Re 2 - none

If suggestion by Deemoney14 doesn't help, then try this.
1. Find and edit this file - /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/horos/horos.xml
2. Edit section with ID "background" like this
<item type="pixmap" id="background" background="true">
<normal file="PATH/TO/YOUR/KDM/WALLPAPER" scalemode="crop"/>
<pos x="0" y="0" width="100%" height="100%"/>
</item>
3. You can get default picture for that theme from http://bit.ly/ohJJ6p
cheers!!
