Yet google adds to the standard with their implementation. I do not know if standard jabber clients can talk directly with google talk clients (probably standard chat works, at least), but they're not REALLY the same thing.

I have no problem talking to Google users using jabber. Afaik even video-chat should work.

They mess up a few things. For one, the ”resource” string; google places some random characters. Video chat didn't work for me.
