[Java 7 bugs?] Can't get keyboard input to Java programs

Am running fully upgraded system and have Oracle's Runtime Java (jre) installed.
Have been running FreeMind, jpdftweak and other Java programs for ages. Now, when I try to type in or edit a filename in a Java program dialogue box, nothing happens after the first time I try typing. But weirdly, the initial text seems to be entered okay, just not any subsequent text. And selecting text with the mouse fails then too.
Ticking check boxes and selecting choices from pulldown menus does seem to work with the mouse however.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

PS: I am setting the environment variable: _JAVA_OPTIONS='-Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=on'
but this setting doesn't seem to affect the problem.

Added later: This could be an IceWM-only problem; things still seem to work using Openbox sad
and: Seems okay with IceWM using jre-6u26-1, but not jre-7-1 or jre-7-2!

Yet later: Java 7 is apparently full of serious bugs so it seems a likely culprit.
