I am considering throwing out my AppleTV and getting something Sandy Bridge-based, and I found a nice HTPC enclosure (OrigenAE S10V) that only takes half-height cards. I've been looking for a suitable Asus card but they don't seem to have any cards like that (nor did I found any other manufacturer, for that matter). I have a nice amp and decent speakers, and this new HTPC setup is supposed to double as my NAS/MPD server, so I want something better than that onboard Realtek crap.
Any tips? Or should I just go for a full-height enclosure?

But this one doesn't have RCA INPUT jacks. I think they're really rare. So far I only remember X-Fi Titanium HD from Creative.
BTW, are you sure it's alright to post your question in this sub-forum?

Thanks, I have a Xonar Essence STX now, comes with RCA jacks, but that's full-height.
As for the subforum, this is the subforum I think misfits the least . Would be weird to post it under kernel & hardware, it's definitely a hardware question but has nothing to do with hardware support an sich, so...

Out of curiosity, are RCA jacks electronically different from phono (headphone) jacks?

I think then what you want are RCA OUTPUT jack. I got the same card.
Shouldn't this be a better one? :

Not Arch- or GNU/Linux-related? Talk about it here!
What do you mean by electronically? I am not an expert but I heard some say that RCA jacks provide better quality.

I meant do they carry a different type of signal/data, or have a different number of contacts, etc. Though I'm pretty sure the second answer is no.

I only know that they are both analog.

RCA may provide a connection with less noise if the signal used is differential, which it can be because each connector sends/receives only one analog channel.
Phono/headphone jacks send single ended signals so they are more prone to picking up noise and probably more prone to crosstalk, also electrical contact may not be as good as with RCA connectors.

Duh! I forgot that RCA was only one channel. However, I had only ever heard of differential and single ended in relation to SCSI.
Thanks for the education!

I haven't used anything like this so I don't know if either of these cards would meet your needs. The Google search terms were
"video capture" rca OR phono plug -usb PCI
There's this Hauppage PCI-E card: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/ … ossus.html. It uses cable adaptors to get to the phono plug connectors. It's US$ 136 at Newegg.
There's Pinnacle System's PCI card that comes with a breakout box for US$ 150 (or $40 used at Amazon US): http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/u … ?view=news.
More common is a phono plug to USB device. Those are as low as US$ 25.

RCA or phono plugs are common on US consumer grade audio, video, camera and game equipment. They are even used as connectors on low power speaker cables. Here's the obligatory wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RCA_connector.

Thanks thisoldman, but unfortunately they're all full-height PCI .

There is no difference between RCA and headphone jacks. They are interchangeable on sound cards. This is all you need.
