[SOLVED] Overheating / sluggishness issue

Hi, I have an Acer laptop. Its specs are:

Athlon64 X2 QL-65 2.1 GHz
4 GB RAM
500 GB HDD (brand new)
ATI HD3200 igp

The problem I have is the following: the laptop overheats quite a bit. Right now I have Chrome with 3 tabs open, and skype, qbittorrent, and terminal running in the background. Despite only a few apps running, my CPU temp (reported by sensors) is ~ 80 degrees. The device has turned itself off quite a few times because of the overheat warning.

When I start doing something more intensive, the temp would go up to 90 degrees, and I'd experience the usual "overheat sluggishness" - even restoring/minimizing windows would be incredibly slow. To make it even worse, I'm using Xfce - not a heavy-metal KDE or GNOME.

I have to mention that this kind of problem does not happen using Windows 7.

Running # pwmconfig gives me:

/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed

Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] Overheating / sluggishness issue

first try these (as root):

# pacman -S cpufrequtils
# modpropbe powernow-k8
# echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile

then hopefully it will cool down to read

Re: [SOLVED] Overheating / sluggishness issue

Oh man thank you so much! The moment I issued the command, the fan spinned down, and the GHz decreased from 2.1 to 1.05. I assumed OnDemand was the default governor, but apparently it isn't! Thanks again!
