Advice for creating hfs+ filesystem with hfsprogs

I have to help my son to clean up his WD usb-disk.He is running a mac. I would like to know the flags to give after mkfs.hfsplus so he gets a fully functional and "macishly" formatted drive. It's a big drive (1 Tb) so experimenting isn't that fun. I don't think journalling is needed but I don't know how mac does it when using diskutils. BTW, is it needed to write zeros to the disk before running hfsprogs?

Why not format it from his Mac?

I wouldn't ask if that was a possibility.
