How to make XFCE4 look "Good"

Hey there,

Well I finally managed to get Arch Linux installed last night, and mostly configured today >_> And I must say that  I LOVE IT! I was a bit worried to try something other then Ubuntu/Mint but it was truly worth it smile.
Anyways I have seen people have some pretty wicked setups. And I was wondering how I would go about making the XFCE4 Panel look like the one from Crunch Bang Linux? I don't know where to begin :S.

I also tried installing these to themes by moving them to /usr/share/themes But whenever I do they never show up in Settings Manager >> Apearance  | or Settings Manager >> Window Management

Theme 2: http://lassekongo83.deviantart.com/art/Soothe-199342656

One last question, how would I go about making Terminal and other windows "Transparent"?

Re: How to make XFCE4 look "Good"

Hey Brandon, welcome to the forums! big_smile

Could you check to make sure that your theme directories in /usr/share/themes contain the necessary contents ("<theme_name>/gtk-2.0/gtkrc")? More information here

Oh, and I'm assuming that you're using xfce4-terminal, correct? I don't quite know how XFCE and window transparency work, but I would start poking around Google, maybe look at some xcompmgr information. Unless of course someone here more knowledgeable than me in this area can point you in the right direction.

EDIT: Below tongue

To install the themes, extract the tarballs into ~/.themes and they should show up (although it should work just as well in /usr/share/themes, don't know why it wasn't).

To make the terminal transparent, just enable it it the options. In xfce terminal it's under Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Background. Also you'll want to use some kind of compositing manager for true transparency. Xfwm has a built in compositor, so I'd use that, but you can also use something like xcompmgr.

Xcompmgr: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xcompmgr

You can also check the setup I used when I was testing XFCE, it may provide some tips to you for theming or changing the layouts/size of stuff here
