[SOLVED] Installing arch on VMWare: Cannot Boot

The installation seems to work well, then I exit and reboot and I get

  Booting 'Arch Linux'

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/desk/by-uuid/38cdbeae-cabd-4539-9519-98558ec3dd42 ro

Error 15: File not found

I've tried editing the boot sequence commands, but according to the tab completion, my only choices for the kernel in / are lost+found, vmlinuz-linux initramfs-linux.img, and initramfs-linux-fallback.img

And for the root directory, no matter what I type, tab completion always gives me:

Error 11: Unrecognized device string

Re: [SOLVED] Installing arch on VMWare: Cannot Boot

Got it. Modify /boot/grub/menu.lst so vmlinuz26 is vmlinuz-linux, kernel26.img is initramfs-linux.img and kernel26-fallback.img is initramfs-linux-fallback.img

Re: [SOLVED] Installing arch on VMWare: Cannot Boot

Perhaps you would have a better experience with the install as provided by the 2010-05 .iso if you used FTP install during the install process.  This will provide the latest kernel linux-3.0.2-1 and install the proper grub setup to allow booting.

The kernel provided by the .iso is version 33 and cannot boot without making changes.  Since you will not be able to use kernel26 in the future without preventing linux kernel from installing, it seems best to allow it at this install.

Grub2 will be an option in the install process and the internet must be accessed.  Provision is made for those items in the install .iso.

I have had success with that FTP mode and recommend it.
