No capture controls on USB soundcard (Creative SB X-Fi HD)

I have a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi HD USB sound card. Seems to work out of the box when I plug it in, using snd_usb_audio module. When I start alsamixer, in the Playback view it shows two controls: PCM, and PCM Capture Source which allows me to switch between Mic, Line and Phono, three different inputs on the card. In the Capture view, it says "This sound device does not have any capture controls".

I want to use it for recording. I have a microphone plugged in, select Mic as the PCM capture source. In Audacity, I cannot control the input volume (it tells me to use the system mixer). So I can record from the card, but no signal comes in and I cannot control it.

Is there a way to get capture controls, or is there another way to record using a microphone with this card?

Re: No capture controls on USB soundcard (Creative SB X-Fi HD)

Try hitting F6 in alsamixer and figure out which device number the sound card is. Lets say its device 0.  Then try "pactl load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:0,1"  I have the exact same card and this worked in linux mint.  I saw this when trying to figure it out so I figured I should respond.  It added an extra card for me that worked as the input.
