Hi,
I'm using Arch for a while and I'm really happy using it.
Now I want to use a HP L2045w (20", 1680x1050, VGA) display to expand my desktop, but when I activate the display through the gnome system settings I always get a distorted image (see http://picload.org/image/cllpao/monitor.jpg). I wasn't able to correct the picture with the display's settings.
I have tested the newest Ubuntu alpha (11.10) and fedora (15) livecd too and there is the same problem. When using Windows it is working so there shouldn't be a general problem.
I have also tested a Acer 17" display (1280x1024) which worked flawless.
I hope someone can give me a hint to solve this problem and get a clear picture from the display.
Thanks a lot
Felix

Have you tried the "auto adjust" feature on your monitor?
Otherwise, we probably need more info... What graphics card are you using? Which driver? What is the output of `xrandr`?

The "auto adjust" feature doesn't change the picture.
I'm using the Intel GMA X4500 graphic card (Intel GM45 chipset) with extra/xf86-video-intel 2.15.0-2.

Hmm. I'm not really sure what's going on; have you tried another monitor? The picture you've given looks exactly like what "auto adjust" should fix...
Could you try enabling and disabling different configurations using xrandr? Like so...
Enable just the external monitor:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --off --output VGA1 --auto
Enable both:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto --output VGA1 --auto --above LVDS1
Enable just the laptop:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto --output VGA1 --off

I have only tried a 17" display which worked. I don't have Immediate access to another widescreen monitor.
When I try this different configurations the problem remains the same. The internal display is working flawless but the external doesn't.
The bottom of the black bar on the top of the picture is not the border of the "active picture". I can hide the pointer behind it and when I maximise windows the titlebar disapears behind this black bar.
