sound card for studio use

Hi

I have at the moment an M-audio fast track usb 2 and although it works great for all kinds of playback, it won't work in jack (this is what it appears at the moment - will dig in more in the future). The onboard sound card is disablement from bios.

Do any of you guys know some good (cheap) sound cards that work well on linux for studio use? I prefer USB/firewire, but could also go with PCI if they are cheaper/better.

Also, when I activated in bios the on-board sound card and unplugged my usb one, Archlinux worked with it (I could hear the sound), but there was also A LOT of hiss (noise). What could cause that? My motherboard is an asus h55-evo-m.

You shouldn't necessarily need to disable your internal soundcard in the BIOS. I use my external card, without disabling the onboard. ALSA offers a mechanism, that allows you to specify the order in which the soundcards are loaded. Most if not all sound apps can be told which card they should use - including Jackd.

as far as Jackd is concerned. You card works fine with it. I don't have the answer off-hand (as i don't own one). but if you google it, you will find the answer. I know this because over the years i have seen MANY threads and blogs on how to setup your card with Jackd. just google your card + jackd - and look for the most recent posts. beyond that, if you still are having issues, hit the linux-audio-user-list or jack-devel-list.

I do have a recommendation. I would suggest PCI over USB or Firewire. USB isn't all that great, and most USB2.0 devices aren't supported properly, with the odd exception. Firewire can be good, however PCI is better. you might consider an M-Audio 1010LT;

the ice-1712 chipsets (envy24) are well supported in linux, and tend to work very well.
