How do I know (and turn it off) if my computer has a wake alarm set that will automatically make it power on. When I go to sleep at night I power off my laptop with sudo shutdown -hP now (have also tried sudo halt -p) and when I wake up in the morning my computer has restarted itself. I know that it powers down all the way because at the end of the shutdown it says powering off then the screen turns off. It then restarts in the middle of the night.
I saw that you can find out about alarms with 'cat /proc/driver/rtc' and this is the output:
rtc_time : 16:17:21
rtc_date : 2011-08-23
alrm_time : 07:52:09
alrm_date : 2012-08-16
alarm_IRQ : no
alrm_pending : no
update IRQ enabled : no
periodic IRQ enabled : no
periodic IRQ frequency : 1024

24hr : yes
periodic_IRQ : no
update_IRQ : no
HPET_emulated : yes
BCD : yes
DST_enable : no
periodic_freq : 1024

If anyone knows if this is the reason my laptop is restarting that will be a great help, or else an idea of what else could be causing this issue. Thank you

The case of the vampire laptop... have you tried a silver bullet or a wooden stake into the CPU
Seriously though... AFAIA, the only way this can happen (and not be a Wake On Lan function) is if it's turned on in the BIOS. You might check it.
Here's more on the topic from the MythTV folks:
