xine won't play dvd's

I was running sabayon when for no reason that I could think of, xine, smplayer and vlc would no longer play dvd's. The discs would mount and I could see the files but no joy trying to watch. Maybe my gear head dvd burner has gone bad, so I replaced it with an asus burner that I had laying around. The result was the same behaviour. Then I pulled out my clonezilla image of archlinux and updated it, to my surprise the same thing happened. However, I was able to get vlc going by changing /dev/dvd to /dev/sr0 and the same thing worked for smplayer, but, I can't get xine to work with /dev/sr0. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Well I was changing the wrong setting so now it will play dvd's with dvd set to /dev/sr0 but the setting won't stay. When I restart xine the setting reverts to /dev/dvd. Here's the output:
[a@Astudio ~]$ xine
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.6-[DEBUG].
