gtkpod destroyed my iPod

I have a 4g nano iPod which I connected and disconnected to my computer just fine, until I used gtkpod to back up my iPod. when I disconnected it, it apple logo'd (read died). I restored it on a friends computer, and tried again (I had to put my songs back on the ipod), at which point it apple logo'd again. since then, gtkpod has updated, but i want to be sure that my ipod won't die again. gtkpod worked great for me on ubuntu

I've only used libgpod recently, not gtkpod.  There was no problem in accessing the database but I did not attempt to modify anything on the ipod.
