Nouveau temporary desktop freeze

I am experiencing one of these like every 10 seconds or so.They are minimal,don't last more than a fraction of a second and make gaming experience hell on earth especially in a game like Assaultcube.
I checked top and there were no crazy processes eating memory.
Before I posted this I tried upgrading to mesa-git hoping this would solve my problem but libdrm-git would not compile properly.
Do I have any options except for downgrading xorg and installing nvidia ?
