Guild-Wars on Arch

I wasn't sure where to put this thread since there's no gaming section.  But anyway, I want to run guild-wars on my arch laptop.. any suggestions on how to do that?  I saw that it works with Cedega 4.3 but details are sparse.  I don't even really know how to get Cedega if I wanted it.  Anyone have any experience with somewhat complex game installs?  Should I try with wine first?

Re: Guild-Wars on Arch

you either need the experimental directX patched wine, or Cedega, which costs money.... unless of course Guild Wars is done in OpenGL (then someone can make a native port)

I don't even really know how to get Cedega if I wanted it.

and this one:

I can't even find where to buy Cedega..

I thought maybe the link would help....

Re: Guild-Wars on Arch

hey... ummm so how much does guildwars cost... it looks interesting, seeing as it's pvp based (eq2 has no pvp, so I miss it)... I might try it out.. is there a free trial?

Re: Guild-Wars on Arch

Unfortunately, if you follow the links for getting Cedega it just leads to the release notes. I wonder how people installed it?

I just read through the entire (long 7 page) thread you pointed me to. Very interesting. It seems that there are still significant problems with Guild Wars via Cedega but it seems to be improving.  I guess before I worry too much about it I should concentrate on getting 3D acceleration working on my thinkpad x41.  GLX gears is about 452fps and I think I'm going to need to do better than that. smile

If you subscribe (link at top right) first and then log in, you will find the links to download Cedega and/or Point2Play.

Re: Guild-Wars on Arch

Does that mean you have to pay $5/month to use it or just to keep current?

Re: Guild-Wars on Arch

It's $5/month recurring to keep current, but they lock you in for a 3-month stint at first... meaning you either have to pay $15 up front then decide if you want to keep paying after 3 months, or just not bother with Cedega. It was like that the last time I checked, at least. Personally, I'm still dual booting with WinXP which I mostly just use for games. wink

Re: Guild-Wars on Arch

I quit my Cedega subscription because I felt the WorldPay service they used was a hassel to maintain. Plus, with wine coming around so quickly it seems like Cedega's only advantage is copy protection support.

I'd try the Wine w/ DirectX patch first before laying out any cash for Cedega.

download the client from guildwars.com and pay for an account at plaync.com (it's the same people who did AO, CoH, LineageII, etc - all of which I just bought online like that)

BTW I did just buy it...
I'm going to play it tonight

On Guild Wars specifically or for other apps?  If it's for GW I'd be curious to hear if you experienced the problems (mousing, dark shades) that the Cedega people are complaining about in the earlier linked thread.

PS: I'm now dual-booting XP with a FAT32 partition so in theory I can just run my Windows install of Guild Wars and not worry about the install..

Re: Guild-Wars on Arch

Got it working via this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? … guild+wars

Screenscreenshot1xw1.th.png

Not running FS just for show. Running at 1280x1024 normally. Some minor artifacts on shadows but other than that runs very smooth.
