Samba upgrade results in "unable to find suitable address"

Upgrading to Samba 3.6.0-8 results in the error

 samba unable to find suitable address

and the share is not mounted.  Smbclient spits out

params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf":
        No such file or directory

Downgrading Samba to the previous version fixed the issue.
