gnome3 vs kde4

Test machines were an acer aspire one(intel graphics) and thinkpad t42(radeon rv200).

On the acer netbook gnome-shell is a good fit with the small screen and works well with the graphics adapter while using somewhat more resources than kde. I tried kde and that worked but gnome-shell was simply superior(after tweaking some appearance settings).

The thinkpad would not work with gnome-shell because of the radeon mobility 7500. Apparently gnome developers decided to support only certain graphics cards. I was only able to see window contents when the windows were maximized(opaque application window otherwise). Since gnome has removed the ability to maximize many windows that made the experience less than pleasant. The fallback mode was less useable than xfce4 and was quickly replaced with kde. The kde developers apparently believe in testing the graphics card before enabling certain effects. Using kde requires fewer resources than gnome-shell and the laptop runs about 10C cooler after startup.

I suspect that gnome-shell is using the cpu for all kinds of rendering on the thinkpad(even in fallback mode). My main reason for thinking that is because the netbook does run hotter with gnome-shell but not that much hotter.

Different projects, different aims, different apps. These sorts of tests are always highly subjective, depending on hardware configuration, software interaction and individual use, and you can find plenty of others just like it online: G2 vs. KDE3, G2 vs. KDE4, G3 vs. KDE4. Utlimately, very few people care about the few percentage points of difference that a benchmark shows: if their hardware can't handle the software, or they just don't like it , they won't use it.

I agree entirely. Gnome seems to have gone to an extreme in tossing out compatibility with older hardware. KDE hasn't. I happen to have some hardware that gnome works with. I have NO hardware that KDE4 will fail on. If kde were to concentrate on resource use I can see it becoming the defacto DE on older and newer hardware. After all, speed never goes out of style(look at openbox).

I think it's a little unfair to be comparing Gnome 3 with KDE 4 right now. Gnome 3 is still in it's infancy, if you remember KDE 4 wasn't even usable until the 4.4 release.

I like gnome3 with fallback mode better. I already felt that in the .0 release, gnome3.0 is doing a great job. (better than kde4.0)

I couldn't get used to gnome3 because it was too big of a jump for me in how the desktop works (not that it's bad, it was just really different for me). I like KDE, and I agree with david that if KDE could get it's resource usage to drop significantly, it would be a fantastic DE. I'd also like to see gnome 3 once it gets to 3.4 or 3.5 though, as I'm sure it will be pretty slick then, like kde 4.5+ is.

The only reason that keeps me away from KDE (apart from dwm, haha) is the memory leaks it has. If they fix the resource usage and the memory leaks, I would defiantly recommend it to people rather than gnome.
