xgamma only momentarily sets gamma

I am using the command

    xgamma -gamma 0.9

to alter the gamma of my monitor.  My problem, is that it does seem to set the gamma to the appropriate level, but only momentarily (anywhere from a few milliseconds to almost half a second).

Any ideas?  I've yet to try putting any settings in my xorg.conf.

Edit: And I would also like to know how I can set my monitor brightness and contrast?  Are these settings available at all? I have a Lenovo T500, and there aren't any hardware buttons to do this.
