I did a pacman -S of openoffice-en and on first run it wants to copy files somewhere. I'm running as non-root so I don't have permissions to put them in /opt/ or /usr/bin/ or /usr/share/ or anything. At the same time I'd like to avoid installing it in my home directory. What are my options? Should I run it as root first?

You should let it write the files in the home directory. I usually put a dot in front of the directory name, so it will be hidden.
It's just writing some configuration files, I think. This is just what most other programs do, without asking first

Ah! Great suggestion! Ok -- next quesiton.. during the install it prompts for Java. I think I got j2re via pacman (almost sure).. How do I point openoffice to it?
[edit: after a restart, Openoffice could detect my java install.]
