Cannot use pacman

I just installed arch last night. I was looking to add some packages, but I get

error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/extra.db: Failed to open ' /var/lib/pacman/extra.db'
error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/community.db: Failed to open ' /var/lib/pacman/community.db'

pacman -Syy synchronizes core to 100% and then it just hangs there. The 100% is the last output that I see.

Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks.

I can only sync the core.db. I tried creating extra and community files, thinking it would update them, but the same thing happens.

So, I manually downloaded the community and extra db files. Now I can use pacman to download packages, but this is not ideal. I would like pacman to sync the databases.

Have you tried using another server?

Re: Cannot use pacman

Yes. I tried several. It will only sync the core.db and it hangs immediately following that.

Its probably worth mentioning that I am on a proxy, but everything else works through it. I just downloaded tons of packages after manually downloading the db files.

Re: Cannot use pacman

Your "manual" downloaders don't use the same mechanism as pacman. It's entirely possible this is a proxy issue, as we've seen a lot of them with libfetch (and libfetch goes away for 4.0.0).

Re: Cannot use pacman

You can run

pacman --debug -Syu

and paste the output here or e.g. on pastebin (it will be quite big).

I only manually downloaded the extra and community db files. I downloaded the packages through pacman.

I will know if its a proxy issue in a few hours when I go home.

You've got

while I get

Yes, I know, but thanks for pointing that out, because now I see my previous post got truncated - probably sloppy copy-pasting, sorry.

Re: Cannot use pacman

That was the whole debug log.

Sure enough it worked at home. Pacman must not like the proxy. Odd that it downloads the source.db and then stops. At least I have a work around when need and on the proxy. Is there somewhere that I might be able to submit this as a bug?

I'd say go ahead and open a bug report, but it won't go anywhere. We've changed the download library that pacman uses for the next release. In part, because it handles proxied connections a lot more elegantly.

v4.0.0rc2 is hopefully due out in the next week. If you can reproduce this under the RC, I'm very interested in a bug report.
