i was following through a wiki and
# groupadd
bash: groupadd: command not found
# /usr/sbin/groupadd
bash: /usr/sbin/groupadd: No such file or directory
# locate groupadd
/etc/pam.d/groupadd
im, well, lost
how does this happen, or more importantly how is it corrected
this computer also has a problem after boot:
it goes to init 3 and asks for username
i enter it but when i hit enter it doesn't prompt for a password. instead it moves the cursor down a line
[luckily it also starts ssh, and i can get X running by logging on remotely]
could this be related
(edit:) gpasswd is also missing
thanks
will

$ pacman -Qo /usr/sbin/groupadd
/usr/sbin/groupadd is owned by shadow 4.0.7-1
So you seem to be missing the shadow utils, quite a serious problem. Any idea how you lost it?

thanks for the reply
i was thinking the harddrive was dieing, but i was running ssh with security last in mind (root password was root) ...and i noticed when logging in from school that the last access was from an ip that end up being from Romania - my root password was changed, and the ftp server rules were changed. so i guess a malicious person could have deleted other stuff
but.. more on the problem

yeah...you might want to reinstall now.

Indeed... and please keep security in mind when connected to the internet, especially when running a server. Also don't forget to make regular backups of all important data.

I'm sorry but this is pretty funny.
A bus station is where a bus stops.
A train station is where a train stops.
On my desk I have a workstation.

I had a similar problem running a FTP server on windows *gasp*. What was weird was that I never ran a server on this computer before, I never told anybody I was going to, I was the only person who knew it existed. Somebody from some European country accessed it and deleted all the files and put porn on it. From then on I started caring about anonymous ftp restrictions.
