Pulseaudio alsa plugin produces distort audio.

I have Creative X-Fi Surround USB audio card, which produces bad sound of 44100Hz signal. So I made pulseaudio to upmix it by

default-sample-rate = 48000
default-sample-channels = 6

in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf.
Applications wich use pulseaudio directly or through Phonon work great. However, games and other things that resort to Alsa plugin produce exactly the same cracling static as if they still work on 44100Hz.
Can somebody tell me how to configure alsa plugin and why is it not affected by /etc/pulse/daemon.conf setting?
I tried to search the Web for it but just couldn't ask the right search query.

Offtopic question

The only reason I use PulseAudio is because pure ALSA for my audio card works, but there is no volume channels in alsamixer, not even the Master. Yes, I know that they can be hidden, they are not. Kmix is empty too. Google didn't help much. May be someone could advise me on this issue, and I can drop PulseAudio alltogether?
