acpi not sending laptop lid close events

Hello all,

I'm trying to suspend when I close my laptop, but the acpi handlers in /etc/acpi/handler.sh and /etc/acpi/actions/lm_lid.sh don't run when I do.  When I open the lid, they run twice.  My guess is that the close event is getting delayed until the open event, but I'm not sure (the two events look the same from acpi_listen).

Furthermore, /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state always reports the lid is open, even when it's closed.
