Intel 830m video problems

I'm running archlinux on a Toughbook CF-28,it works very good but I have problem with the old 830m Intel video chipset.
I have kernel linux 3.0.4 intel-dri 7.11 xf86-video-intel 2.16.0 mesa 7.11  xorg-server 1.10.4 and Kms enabled.

3D works good (e.g. I can run armagetronad) screenshot250911213238.th.png but 2D acceleration is broken,I can't see videos with Xv (intel) or enable kwin effects the system freeze or the acceleration is disabled.screenshot250911214641.th.png

I can see movies only enabling the slower X11 video outtput in mplayer/vlc..

I know that this video drivers don't work very well with older intel cards, but I want to get them working..I hope developers will not drop support for these cards.
Enabling shadow, disabling dri or downgrading is not a solution.
Where's /debug/dri/0/i915_error_state ?

Enabling shadow, disabling dri or downgrading is not a solution.

No, but it's all you've got. Actually, there's one other possibility: Use an old but still supported distro, like CentOS 5. Or if you want to stick with Arch, compile yourself old versions of X and the intel driver.

Re: Intel 830m video problems

There are some improvements when compiling the latest intel driver with --enable-sna (generation2 detected, but there's light corruption) or --enable-xvmc (sna is faster, but xvmc is stable)..I used --enable-vmap too,but I don't know its purpose.
Now the system is usable enought, better gtkperf scores, and I can play even mkv sd videos with X11 output without much problems but high cpu usage.. Xv and desktop effects still don't work.

The Intel i855 (along with the i830 and i845) chips have suffered serious stability regressions since the implementation of DRI2 (and the associated GEM kernel work) in the driver. These features have stressed parts of the hardware that haven't previously been heavily used in the past, and turn out to have hardware bugs.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/4658/how … 5gm-driver

There are hardware bugs that can't be fixed..so I think we'll newer see a fully working dri2 intel driver for 8xx chipset..

If downgrading I would have to use pre-dri2 driver like 2.9.0 and xorg 1.7.x I think..I would need a complete list about all X related package to recompile.

Re: Intel 830m video problems

Yes, xf86-video-intel-2.9. It works up to xorg-server-1.8, though maybe it'll be stabler with 1.7. The only other packages you'd need to recompile are for input, so xf86-input-evdev and xf86-input-synaptics. I don't know which versions would work with xorg-1.8, you could start with the latest and work your way down until a version compiles and works.

Re: Intel 830m video problems

I've installed  kernel 2.6.33rt,intel 2.9.1,xorg-server 1.7.6,libdrm 2.4.19,xf86-input-evdev 2.3.2,intel-dri 7.7 etc xorg works, but I cant get DRI to work performances are even worse than xorg 1.10 and bluescreens with mplayer.

Do you know the extact version of these package in order to get a fully working xv video playback?

Do you know an old working live cd (CentOs 5 is install cd only,Ubuntu 9.04 livecd doesnt have vlc, video codecs and repositories dead) with vlc, codecs etc to test video playback?maybe Mandriva..So I would take note of the version of the drivers then install them in archlinux.

I could try xorg 1.11 and xf86-intel-git too,but I dont think they fixed the problem. For reference on windows xp I can play SD avi videos with low cpu usage and even h264 ones without problems..ridiculous XD

Re: Intel 830m video problems

What video output drivers are you using with mplayer? None of them works?

X11 works (at least with xorg 1.10) but a standard definition avi will take 100% cpu and there is stuttering .. with Xv there's only a bluescreen. On winxp vlc takes less than 20% cpu utilization with the same video.
