Weird OpenBox Issue (Or, What is This, I Don't Even)

Howdy y'all.

I have no clue as to what is happening here. My GUI is freaking out randomly. It might be related to feh, but I'm not sure. I'm using OpenBox with the standard feh bash script for a rotating wallpaper.

Does anybody know what this is? I would have looked it up, but I have no clue what to call this.

Here are some screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/C4PKt#1VTKo

As you can see, it seems to be buttons, images, and scrollbars that seem affected, but sometimes, it'll be my entire desktop background.

Help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Are you running a composite manager?

I looked up "composite manager" in Google, but I'm not sure I quite understand it. Would installing a composite manager fix my issue?

No, it could have been the cause of all this. If you don't know what it is you probably don't use it: do you remember installing and running xcompmgr or cairo-compmgr?

No, I don't remember installing them.

This issue is making me consider to XFCE4 or something. I'd rather not, though.

Re: Weird OpenBox Issue (Or, What is This, I Don't Even)

It really doesn't look like an Openbox related issue. Openbox doesn't touch the rendering of a client window.

It looks like all of the windows you showed in your screenshots are GTK. Maybe you could use lxappearance (in the repos) to change your theme and see if that works? Also, do any Qt windows have this problem?

Before suspecting the window manager or wallpaper setter, I'd suspect the graphic card. Which card do you have and which driver are you using?

I have a AMD Radeon 6900 graphics card. Not sure what driver. How would I look that up? I tried searching for that, but everything I found was based on determining hardware using lspci.

lxappearance looks like it might not be the solution.

If you don't know which driver you're using, it's for sure the open source radeon one. But what you have is a very new card. So based on that I wouldn't rule out driver issues. Try the closed catalyst/fglrx/whatever it's called driver.

Oh, and to check which driver you're using, lspci -k will show you that.

I'd bet my horses on a GPU problem too (hardware or software), the problem being mostly image rendering (icons/miniature previews).

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Cayman PRO [AMD Radeon 6900 Series]
Subsystem: XFX Pine Group Inc. Device 3128
    Kernel driver in use: radeon
    Kernel modules: radeon

Going to try the closed drivers.

EDIT:

Tried installing the catalyst driver. It's not working. This is what I got:

Re: Weird OpenBox Issue (Or, What is This, I Don't Even)

Remove all those packages, they're useless anyway. I'm guessing you installed the xorg group, which is not the way to go (why do people do that? is it in the documentation somewhere?). All you need is xf86-video-ati and ati-dri, and if you intend to use the closed drivers then of course those two packages should also be removed. Along with libgl, as catalyst will install it's own gl libraries.

I removed all of the packages, and replaced my graphics drivers with catalyst. I think that this solved my problems.

Thank you!
