X performance in vmware

Hey guys, I've installed 32-bit arch in vmware Workstation 8 using the following guide:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … _in_VMware

The VM itself is running 2GB with 1 processor with 2 cores and 3D acceleration enabled.  I've installed the open-vm-tools, added it to the DAEMONS array, etc.  Everything is working beautifully except for 1 issue.

The redraw rate is just not up to par.  When I drag a console around, I'm seeing tearing along the sides of the window where the redraw is just not fast enough.

The following is an excerpt from my X log

[    20.873] (==) Matched vmware as autoconfigured driver 0
[    20.873] (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 1
[    20.873] (==) Matched fbdev as autoconfigured driver 2
[    20.873] (==) Assigned the driver to the xf86ConfigLayout
[    20.873] (II) LoadModule: "vmware"
[    20.874] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vmware_drv.so
[    20.885] (II) Module vmware: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[    20.885] 	compiled for 1.10.0, module version = 11.0.3
[    20.885] 	Module class: X.Org Video Driver
[    20.885] 	ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 10.0

As you can see, the vmware driver is getting loaded.

Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?  I can install ubuntu via the easy install, same VM setup, with compositing on, and it works great, so I know it's something with how I've set things up rather than a technical limitation.

edit: I should also mention, I'm currently running xfce4.
