VLC fails to start, using nvidia-96xx drivers

Earlier today, I switched my laptop over to using the nvidia-96xx drivers.  Previously, I had been using the nouveau driver, but it did not provide hardware acceleration on my GPU, a GeForce4 440 GO.  Prior to this, VLC was working.  However, after making the switch, VLC has stopped working and will not startup.  It gives the following command line output before it exits:

VLC media player 1.1.11 The Luggage (revision exported)
Blocked: call to unsetenv("DBUS_ACTIVATION_ADDRESS")
Blocked: call to unsetenv("DBUS_ACTIVATION_BUS_TYPE")
