Wifi broken after update -- madwifi

I haven't updated in about 6 months or so, did a pacman -Syu, had to remove madwifi to get the new kernel.

i understand that madwifi is deprecated now, if i run wicd or nm-applet it seems to be able to 'see' wireless networks, but I can't connect to any of them.

if i didn't have the right module, would I even be able to see the wireless networks? i appear to have a wireless interface wlan0 as well.

any config files i need to post let me know, thanks guys.
