f3607gw mobile broadband device - n00b questions before buying plan

Hi,

I am in Austria running Arch on a Toshiba R700 laptop which came with an internal 3G modem. I am considering getting this 15 Gb mobile broadband plan here without the USB stick ("ohne Datenstick"). I am completely new to mobile internet (please excuse my n00b terminology and questions) and therefore would like to know beforehand if I understood the procedure to follow and whether there is a chance of getting the internal modem working with arch.

Here are my questions/concerns:

1. Hardware and info from provider

My laptop has a slot for a SIM card, so apparently the 3G modem needs a SIM card to work (is this correct?).

So, in principle, what I should receive from Orange would be:

  • The PPP (?) connection details

  • A SIM card

Is this correct?

2. Hardware support

As I said, my laptop has a 3G modem. The output of dmesg | grep -i mobile is

[    6.214365] cdc_ether 1-1.5:1.6: wwan0: register 'cdc_ether' at usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.5, Mobile Broadband Network Device, 02:80:37:ec:02:00
[10706.829887] cdc_ether 1-1.5:1.6: wwan0: unregister 'cdc_ether' usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.5, Mobile Broadband Network Device
[10707.157823] cdc_ether 1-1.5:1.6: wwan0: register 'cdc_ether' at usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.5, Mobile Broadband Network Device, 02:80:37:ec:02:00
[48977.944606] cdc_ether 1-1.5:1.6: wwan0: unregister 'cdc_ether' usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.5, Mobile Broadband Network Device
[48978.276432] cdc_ether 1-1.5:1.6: wwan0: register 'cdc_ether' at usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.5, Mobile Broadband Network Device, 02:80:37:ec:02:00

The output of lsusb is

(...)
Bus 001 Device 010: ID 0930:1311 Toshiba Corp. F3607gw v2 Mobile Broadband Module
(...)

The mobile broadband modules project supports this device and provides drivers.

The relevant interfaces are (list obtained with by running the script described here):

ttyACM0 : TOSHIBA F3607gw Mobile Broadband Data Modem
ttyACM1 : TOSHIBA F3607gw Mobile Broadband Modem
ttyACM2 : TOSHIBA F3607gw Mobile Broadband GPS Port
cdc-wdm0 : TOSHIBA F3607gw Mobile Broadband Device Management
cdc-wdm1 : TOSHIBA F3607gw Mobile Broadband USIM Port

These devices files are all under /dev/. So apparently the device is recognized and no further modules need to be loaded, right? When I do a lsmod, f3607gw is not present. Should it be?

There seems to be a certain chance of getting the mobile connection working under linux, right?

How should I understand the /dev/ttyACM2 device? Can my laptop function as a GPS receiver?

3. Setting up the connection

What I should do is just follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/USB_3G_Modem replacing /dev/ttyUSB0  by my /dev/ttyACM0 and the connection details by those povided by Orange, right?

Maybe also https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … aler_HOWTO could be a quick alternative.

Thanks in advance for your help and clarification. I hope i will be able to surf with my Arch laptop from anywhere soon smile
