Is the end really near?

Has anyone checked the frontpage of the mplayer site lately? I suppose it's only a matter of time before big business wins and everyone must pay before doing ANYTHING. Damn shame!

Wait a minute... Making an open-source player for a proprietary format violates patent laws? Now that is just stupid! Ripping off a proprietary player I could see, or ripping off an encoder or format and claiming it to be your own... But making your own player? That is ridiculous.

no, I think it has to do with codecs... the decoding of certain video formats are patented...

Re: Is the end really near?

What suprises me more is that they've been able to do it this long without getting in trouble.

Well, that's still ridiculous.

Ooops... guess I should have searched before posting!

Yes, it would seem software patents are endangering free and open computing in general.

I guess it's only a matter of time before M$ makes OpenOffice quit supporting Office file formats. Perhaps resistance really is futile!

nah, we'll all just be coding from inside America's prisons. Its great, really... we can program all day and have our food delivered. Best of all, we won't have to tape garbage bags over our windows...

Or go out to walk the dog because your mom thinks the auora that surrounds your sun-fosaken skin is disturbing tongue

I seriously want to move out of the United States. One of the reasons is the insane laws and patents/copyrights we have here.

Re: Is the end really near?

that's so funny about the garbage bags. I didn't know other people did that too...

actually, I've upgraded from garbage bags to aluminum foil. Much nicer and easier to maintain, I must say.
