[SOLVED] Lite-On DVD drive not detected by system

I recently built a new system, but I cannot get the system to detect the DVD drive. I am able to boot from an Ubuntu isntall disk, so I know the drive works on some level -- it's just not detected by the OS. The drive is a Lite-On DS-8A5S SATA drive, and I'm running Gnome 3.2.

It seems to me like the drive isn't even recognized by the kernel, as lsmod returns nothing even vaguely related to dvd or cdrom drives. After manually loading the cdrom kernel module, lsmod | grep cd returns

cdrom 36329 0
xhci_hcd 70783 0
ehci_hcd 39543 0
usbcore 142576 8 btusb,usb_storage,ath3k,uas,usbhid,xhci_hcd,ehci_hcd

However, cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info just returns this

CD-ROM information, Id: cdrom.c 3.20 2003/12/17

I'm kind of at a loss here -- could it be a hardware problem, is it a kernel bug or have I just messed up my configs somehow?

EDIT: The problem was due to the SATA 3 gbit DVD drive being connected to a SATA 6 gbit port on the motherboard. Having connected the drive to a 3 mbit port everything works as it should.

Re: [SOLVED] Lite-On DVD drive not detected by system

Try "sudo wodim -scanbus". Does it find anything?

Re: [SOLVED] Lite-On DVD drive not detected by system

Hm, forgot that dmesg is case sensitive... Writing DVD in caps instead resulted in this:

$dmesg | grep DVD
[ 1.610969] ata2.00: ATAPI: Slimtype DVD A DS8A5S, WP56, max UDMA/100

I also looked through the dmesg output more carefully, and found these

[ 6.629435] ata2.00: TEST_UNIT_READY failed (err_mask=0x4)
[ 11.814737] ata2.00: TEST_UNIT_READY failed (err_mask=0x4)
[ 16.999954] ata2.00: TEST_UNIT_READY failed (err_mask=0x4)

A quick google search indicates that this whole thing is a known problem when connecting a SATA 3 gbit DVD-drive to a SATA 6 gbit port, which is probably exactly what I've done. I'll just have to switch some cables around.

Thanks for the help lagagnon. Marking the topic as solved.
