Importing images to directories by date taken

How would one import images to directories, so that they would be sorted by date taken. An example file path would be like: 2011-10-20/2011-10-20_01.jpg.

I was thinking some kind of a script, which would pull images from one directory and sort them to directories by EXIF-data. Which would be the best software for this kind of a job?

I'm storing my images on external hard drive, and I'd like to import images from my other computers too. That would mean, that i need windows support too. Of course that isn't the primary goal, I just need to get the job done and I can do it with Arch just fine.

Have a look at exiftool (it's in the package perl-exiftool). In the manual look at RENAMING examples - there's one there that does pretty close to what you want to do.

(edit cross posted - so I guess that's two votes for exiftool wink )
