Firefox 'Deer Park'

just in case you guys missed it...the mozilla foundation has released firefox 'deer park'

http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0 … 3&from=rss

ive always have had a problem with firefox cause of some sort of gtk 'sluggishness' bug...things seem to be better with deer park...not sure why though..guess i should check the changelog

themes/extensions from firefox 1.0+ dont work too well AFAIK...things like the preferences window has been completely redisgned..

This version is mainly addressed to

[..] is for testers and developers only, and should not be used if you have no interest in trying out the latest build [...]

Does not seem to be a stable release.

anyway im running it for a while now and it hasnt crashed yet..like i said, people who uses extensions/themes a lot should probably give this one a miss..

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

I've been using the nightly firefox builds for the last few weeks and sure it's not a ''''stable'''' release, but it hasnt crashed and has been perfectly stable here. There are quite a few plugins already available for it, so that isnt an issue either.

Overall it's a nicer release, includes a handfull of new features, a much better preferences dialog, improvements in extension handling, and just feels a bit faster too.

I knew someone would ask this.

There is an option you can enable to allow the back and forward buttons to be 'quicker' As it is by default, it reparses and redisplays the page, causing a delay, with the option enabled it caches the rendered page in ram so your back is much quicker.

The preferences dialog has been totally redesigned and is now much more logical, making it much easier to find things.

Theres a new option, Enable Javascript, and under it "but disable common annoyances" which disables some sorts of annoying javascript effects. I am not sure what they are yet, but hey!

Sanitize, hit one keystroke or a menu item, and it wipes history, cookies, everything, it can also be set to occur on close, so it would be usefull on a system setup as a system kiosk, or to hide that dirty internet history from the night before.

The way extensions is handled has been improved and is much cleaner, for example, when theres an extension from an older version of firefox, it leaves it there, and displays in the extensions dialog "disabled - not compatible with deer park". But your extensions are all fine when you go back to the version of firefox you used before hand.

The process of updating extensions is smoothed out and handles errors better.

If you upgrade from an older version of firefox to the latest nightly, it automatically checks for upgrades to those old extensions when you are starting so you dont have to restart the browser to use them. Small, but nice.

The download manager is improved with a few more options available in the prefs dialog too.

If you open an image in a tab, the icon of the tab is a thumbnail of the image.

Overall, its quicker and more responsive

They're the ones I have noticed, but there are more. Some may have been in 1.0.x, but I never noticed them.

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

Hmmm, just installed it. This is significantly faster than normal Firefox, for me anyway. My previous install was bogged down a bit, not sure what I did to it but it took like 5 whole seconds to load when it used to be almost instant. Deer park fixes that though, I tried packaging it up but failed miserably and it takes soo long to compile I'm not really keen on trying again any time soon sad

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

See if you can get a copy of the build scripts they use for their nightly builds, they always seem to be updated, so they must be compiling.

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

Just use Mozilla's official binary. I see no reason to put an alpha version of software in one of the official repositories, nor do I see a reason to compile it yourself. Seeing that the 1.0.4 build is compiled for i686, I assume the same goes for the Deer Park build. Cheers.

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

I see no reason to put an alpha version of software in one of the official repositories

I wouldn't want it in any official repository,  I make pkgbuilds for almost everything I install just so I can install it with pacman and keep better track of exactly what's installed on my system. That way at any time I can pipe the output of pacman -Q to a text file, go through and make a list of packages I don't use anymore and remove them and know I've covered everything.

nor do I see a reason to compile it yourself

I do, same reason as above. Simply so I can install it via pacman and it's probably easier than figuring out mozilla's install program to see if I can get an extracted binary and cp it to /opt.

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/ … ha1.tar.gz
they always release a regular tar.gz with the release, along with the installer, just extract to opt wink

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

Damn this Deer Park Alpha 2 rocks! Fast as hell, consumes memory a bit less than normal Firefox, feels more responsive and.. did I mention its fast? Seems to be pretty stable, at least my everyday browsing works like a charm.

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

Did you notice the new error messges?

When you get a 404 or timeout or connection problem or somethijng you get a kickass looking HTML page with a retry button on it. So much better than an annoying dialog.

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

At least in Deer Park there's an option to change how error pages are handled: browser.xul.error_pages.enabled

In DP the default is true.

Uhm... this is NOT stable. Since installing it yesterday, I've had like two crashes like this.

Agreed, though, that it's got nice speed and features.

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

I'm experiencing my very first problems with Deer Park Alpha 2. Been having them for a few days and I'm pretty sure they're caused because I cleaned up my system a bit. So basically take a look at the screenshot and tell me what to do. I suspect it might have something to do with GTK libraries.

As you can see the Save As dialog window is pretty empty..

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

I never had a problem with it.  It worked for one day, and then the next day it started pulling up the official firefox release instead.  Haven't cared enough to check why, or even install again.

Re: Firefox 'Deer Park'

Quite impressed. It works remarkably well (for an alpha), picked the old theme and all extensions, but one, and it runs much faster.
