Apple Earphone Driver?
Anybody know of a driver that will let me use the volume controls on my apple earphones to, well, control the volume? Or how I would catch and process signals from them, maybe write my own driver/script?

I don't think it's possible for the sound card to even receive signals through the headphone port, no matter what piece of hardware sends them.

Shouldn't that at least be sound card dependent? I mean, iPods do evidently receive signals through their earphone port. Maybe it's specialized hardware?

Don't Apple earphones have four connectors? Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve. If one of these is used for the volume control you can forget about using it unless your sound card has the proper connector.

After some google research I managed to find some more information. The fourth ring is used for the mic signal as well as control. For some Samsung and HTC phones the mic works in a specific impedance range, while other impedance values determine control functionality. This should give you some general idea on how it works. Again, unfortunately unless you have a soundcard with a 4-ring connector which can read impedance values, you're out of luck. If you like tinkering, I'm sure it's possible with a modified connector and a microcontroller.
As for Tip-Ring-Sleeve: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS_connector That's what a 3.5mm plug is called.
