[SOLVED] Can't shutdown PC : irq 16 nobody cared

Hello,

I don't really know where the issue comes from (ie laptop, kernel, hardware...) so I decided to post this in the Newbie corner.

First I wanted to mention it is a new issue on my laptop, I'm not quite sure when it really started, maybe after a pacman -Syu but not certain. Everything else works as usual.

So, every time I shutdown, i get the normal "::Stopping Cron Daemon   [DONE]" etc lines, and the last line is "SHUTTING DOWN", but then the screen freezes. After a few minutes, some lines appear on the screen (i'm retyping these lines manually by copying from a photo, because i can't save these lines anywhere since all disks are alreday unmounted)

[  785.707892] irq 16 : nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
[  785.708141] handlers:
[  785.708198] [<ffffffffa00064f0>] usb_hcd_irq
[  785.708254] [<ffffffffa0168220>] mel_interrupt_quick_handler threaded
[  785.708381] [<ffffffffa0223a40>] sdhci_irq
[  785.708428} Disabling IRQ #16

Then nothing, and I need to shutdown my computer manually.

I tried booting with the irqpoll option but it changed nothing. Googling didn't bring me much help neither.

I thought this might help:

Re: [SOLVED] Can't shutdown PC : irq 16 nobody cared

that message seems to be related to multiple devices using the same IRQ, but they are not cooperating well.
(Note : it also happens with irq 17).

The cause is often an addon card that conflicts with onboard stuff.

Please post the output of

$lspci -v

.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't shutdown PC : irq 16 nobody cared

devices that use IRQ 16

00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04)
	Subsystem: Dell Device 04a3
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16

	Subsystem: Dell Device 04a3
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
	Memory at e3970000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1K]
	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: ehci_hcd
	Kernel modules: ehci-hcd

0b:00.1 SD Host controller: O2 Micro, Inc. Device 8320 (rev 05) (prog-if 01)

Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16

	Capabilities: <access denied>
	Kernel driver in use: sdhci-pci
	Kernel modules: sdhci-pci

that means 2 intel devices and 1 3rd party use irq 16.
The O2 Micro 8320 is a smartcard reader, try blacklisting the sdhci-pci module to see if that allows a normal shutdown.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't shutdown PC : irq 16 nobody cared

Hey that did the trick! Thanks a lot. I'll just turn the mod on again when I need to read smartcards.
