but it's not the video files, because if I play again the part where the playback pauses occured, they don't occur the second time in the same place... what could be the problem ?
before switching to Arch, I had this problem after I've upgraded to kernel version 3 while I was using Debian Testing, but the playback pauses were occuring much more frequently...

Anything interesting in mplayer's output? What kind of options are you using? Does it happen at the start, regularly, just for some filetypes?

no errors and no messages in mplayer's output
all options are:
vo=xv
ao=alsa
mixer-channel=Master
nolirc=yes
nojoystick=yes
font=Arial
subcp=latin2
subpos=95
so far, I noticed these pauses during playback on every .avi and .mkv files that I've watched, and the pauses are random, they are not occurring twice in the same places in time; ram and cpu are below 100% during playback, even during playback of 720p .mkv's

Are you using gui mplayer or cli? Have you tried using vlc or some other player to make sure it's mplayer specific? Mplayer: what to report gives some other ideas on information you may wish to post here, such as what happens if you run mplayer with verbosity enabled.
