Hey there
when i try to run grip, even as root, it gives me an error
"can't initialize /dev/cdroms/cdrom0"
here is the fstab line
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
the device works, i can burn CDs with xcdroast just fine..
hmmmm.
any suggestions ?

why, should i be ?
better than /dev ?
lemme know
thanks

devfs is legacy now. Most programs nowadays require udev.
I would highly recommend making the switch even if it doesn't solve your problem...then you can change that ridiculous naming scheme over to /dev/hda1-5 /dev/hdb1-5 etc.

OK i am sold, but is it going to scramble all of my system settings ?
like alll the stuff that i run now.
is this something that should be done at a fresh install, or am i going to be ok?

It wont mess anything up. Its a pretty simple process really, just follow the wiki and remember to reboot.
If that doesn't solve your problem you can try installing dbus and hal and add them in that order in your DAEMONS() array in /etc/rc.conf
