Minecraft and the open source radeon driver: Bad performance

Hi,

I saw this thread:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=118608
and the only answer was to use catalyst.

Well, this is not really what I have in mind. I have googled a bit but not much turned up.

So does anybody have an explanation why minecraft runs so slow on the Open Source drivers?

I have a HD 6550 with mesa git. I don't expect minecraft to run really good.
But come on: it runs with 4-5 FPS. And it only uses OpenGL 1.4!
As a comparison I have tried the Unigine Heaven Benchmark. 12 FPS.
As another comparison: I can play Portal 2 in wine quite well on pretty high settings.

But not minecraft. How is this possible?

Crappy (Minecraft) code?

There is an open-source project called "minetest". It's a Minecraft clone written in C++. And it even runs on netbooks.

Manicdigger runs with 60 FPS too.

//edit

That's why I ask. I don't expect minecraft to have very good performance but the actual performance is waaaay below anything I would expect.
