XBMC crashes (X) on start

Hi there,

After my battery went dead and my laptop fell-out instead of hibernating or shutting down, XBMC started crashing X when started in full-screen. If I start it in windowed mode it starts normally. My laptop was connected with hdmi to a television. It happened with the git-compiled version but now also with the one from pacman.

Are you sure there was no system upgrade in between which could brake stuff? If it's actually black magic from battery dead try clean xmbc configs (probably /home/username/.xbmc)
Try to run xbmc from terminal and see output for errors, missing or wrong libraries etc

Ik tried clearing settings, re-compiling and installing the version from pacman. Re-installing libx11 didn't do anything. Also compiling the video drivers from git hasn't helped. Is it possible that somewhere wrong settings are preserved? It could be that it was a coincidence but after it fell out it went into fall-back mode. After rebooting, gnome started up normally but xbmc started crashing, that's why I thought the battery going dead while on hdmi is the source of my problems.

Did you try to run xbmc on fresh new user's account? Do you have custom xorg.conf? Also you could try to hook-up TV via hdmi the same way as before the fall and then run xbmc in fullscreen, if it'll work exit xbmc, disconnect TV and run xbmc again on laptop

I can confirm this issue on a Thinkpad T61 and on a Desktop machine both with Intel graphics. When starting xbmc, the whole Xorg crashes and I find myself at the gdm login.

I have tried:
- reinstall xorg-server and drivers, libx11, xbmc
- delete whole ~/.xbmc/
- create new user
- change display resolution

Only fix for this is starting the gnome-session in fallback mode. As soon as gnomeshell is running: no chance

All components are on the current version as of now

I had the same thing on my acer aspire one X crash back to gdm when starting fullscreen.

Try
xbmc --standalone
from the command line, works for me your mileage may vary

Are you sure this is xbmc problem. I am having the same with any video player (smplayer, vlc, gnomeplayer). Seems like more related to xorg or xf86 libraries update.

Are you using composite by any chance? If so, disable it.

How did you solve this ? , Im having the the same problem with xbmc , i cant run it standalone either . i get an error about no screens and no opengl driver

Hi Cardiel,

I am not sure if your question is related to me and issue I had. As I wrote before, my issue was more related to latest xorg and catalyst version.
I could actually start up the VLC, and other media players but when tried to play a movie, it always crashed and kicked me out of DE.
I did not tried XBMC but I would assume the same would happen there.

Solution which works so far for me was to blacklist xorg and xf86 packages from pacman and downgrading to earlier package 1.10
