internet access help

I have been trying to install Arch on my laptop but I'm having trouble getting it to connect to the internet through wireless or ethernet cable. This is after I've installed everything from the core iso onto a virtualbox disk. I've read through all of the related pages in the wiki and also through similar topics opened on this forum plus anything else I've found from google, none have helped. I think its probably due to my lack of knowledge rather than there being something wrong with my software but that's more or less the reason I decided to install Arch, to learn about it. Whenever I type pacman -Syu I get errors like failed retrieving file and no address record, and when I type ping -c google.com I get the reply: ping: unkown host google.com

I have an Intel corporation 82540EM gigabit ethernet controller on a sony vaio laptop, if that is of any help. You have probably guessed by now that my knowledge in this software is limited so idiot proofing any answers is welcomed

Re: internet access help

If you use DHCP you can try using dhcpd - just run it as root with your ethernet cable plugged in and see if that helps at all.

Re: internet access help

Okay, lets start with some basics.

Please post the output of ip addr and of lspci -nn  (That is two n's, not an m)

Re: internet access help

Have you configured virtualbox correctly to enable network access?

Re: internet access help

I missed that you were installing in a virtual machine.  Time for bed.  In addition to what skunktrader (who is paying more attention than I) suggested, you might verify that the host itself can see the Internet.

Re: internet access help

After playing around with Virtualbox's network settings for a while I didn't get anywhere with it. Is there anything specific I should do?

Below is the result of typing lspci -nn into terminal on my already installed ubuntu that's running the virtual machine, is that ok or do I need to do it from the virtual machine itself?

From what I've gathered dhcp is a core package that needs to be added to a daemon list in the /etc/rc.conf file. anything else I should know about it?

Re: internet access help

Here is what I understand:
Your host is running Ubuntu, and has internet connectivity.
You are running VirtualBox on the host.
You are installing Arch in a VirtualBox VM.
You have no network connectivity from within the VM.

How is your network configured?  Have you a router, or does your host connect directly to a single port device like a DSL Modem?
In your machine settings, set up an Ethernet Connection to use NAT.  Then start your Arch VM.  Then tell us about the output of ip addr from the Arch VM.
If you've a router, you might also try Bridged mode.

Both of the above may depend on Ubuntu configuration to enable NAT routing or Bridge mode.  I am afraid I cannot help with this as it is an Ubuntu issue.  I can suggest this link that that shows up in the first page of a Google search. Note that I have not tried this, nor do I run Ubuntu.

Lastly, You can set up an interface to be "Host Only" interfacing.  This will create a virtual interface that has only two endpoints.  The host, and the guest.  This would allow you to, say, ssh from one to the other; but there would be no route to the internet.

Speaking as a fan of Arch, you could just install Arch beside Ubuntu on a separate partition and set up a dual boot smile
Along the same vein, you could burn a bootable media and see if Arch can use your network hardware without actually installing anything.

Re: internet access help

So I took the plunge and let Arch format the whole disk and install itself. Same outcome as with virtualbox but I like to believe I've narrowed down the possible problems.

I (normally) access the internet through a router but now when I connect the laptop to the router with an ethernet cable the router doesn't flash the light indicating that something has connected to it. hopefully cutting out the whole VM thing will narrow down whats wrong with the internet connection. Any suggestions?

I also tried what boydey1 suggested above and unfortunately it didn't work.

and what was the error output (if any, maybe it just simply didn't work) from dhcpcd? It may help in pinpointing exactly what is wrong.
