Hi,
The open-source ATI driver has my laptop at ~80C before starting X. So I tried installing the propriety driver, which involved downgrading Xorg to 1.10 (seems to be a known issue).
Now the screen turns black when gdm loads. The issue seems to be with fglrx. The log says it isn't there, but I can modprobe it.
