kernel USB error

Every time I boot my computer I get the following error message:

kernel: [ 18.334100] generic-usb 0003:1C4F:000E.0002: usb_submit_urb(ctrl) failed

It doesn't happen at the same time during the boot process every time.

Does anyone have any idea what kind of problem it may indicate and if it can be fixed?  Am slightly concerned it may indicate some sort of motherboard problem...

Re: kernel USB error

Do you possess a custom configured kernel or maybe some sort of non-arch kernel (-ck, -pf, etc.)?

Re: kernel USB error

How long does it take for your kernel to start? That log string is dated 18 seconds after start. Does that mean you can't see even tty for at least 18 seconds from booting the OS? Or that error comes after start or even after you log in?

Re: kernel USB error

I can't give any input until the message has appeared.  Annoyingly, it often appears after the log in prompt - meaning I can't try and log in until after the error appears.

Everything else seems to be starting happily in the meantime, however.

Re: kernel USB error

That's too long to boot up.
Have you had the same problem before or that appeared after some particular action?
Is your keyboard a USB one?

Re: kernel USB error

It is a USB keyboard - and has been since before the problem started. I'm not aware of any particular action that caused it to happen.  It's been happening for a month or so, but not before that.

Re: kernel USB error

Try booting with all other USB-devices except the keyboard unplugged. Any change?

Re: kernel USB error

Hi,

I have an identical problem. The culprit is a USB keyboard (cheapest one). I've tried unplugging every USB device except the keyboard - didn't help. What was slightly different was that the keyboard had no name in the output of lsusb in my case (just the "id").

I also couldn't find a solution, but I have found a workaround.

Fortunately my motherboard still had the mixed PS/2 socket and I used this USB -> PS/2 adapter to connect my keyboard.

It's not pretty but works great, no delay at all.

I still would like to know the cause though.

Regards,
szalski

Re: kernel USB error

I'm also running into this issue. Did anybody ever solve this problem?

Re: kernel USB error

Update:

The problem occurs when my USB joystick is plugged into my integrated USB 2 ports. My motherboard is an ASROCK Z77 Extreme4-m. Bios is 1.7, just upgraded. The joystick is a Logitech Attack 3.

Any time the joystick is plugged into the same USB controller as something else, the the keyboard is locked up until the error is thrown. If I have the mouse and keyboard plugged into USB 3, and the joystick is on USB2, the error is still thrown but the keyboard and mosue don't lock up.

I just switched from Mint 15 and it never had any problems with this. Fedora 19 doesn't have the problem either. I never noticed it until I tried Arch.

Obviously the solution is to unplug the joystick, but that's not a real fix.
