I have an HP pavilion dm3 with a touchpad which X won't see for what it is! I think this is also the reason synaptics options won't work in X. I have synaptics installed and have tried several variations of X configs.
Main options I'm trying to enable are Emulate3Buttons and RBCornerButton. My Xorg is below:

As advised in the wiki, you should start with no xorg.conf, and add only what is required. The synaptics package installs /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf which provides a base configuration for your touchpad - you can add additional parameters if required.
Please read the xorg and synaptics wiki pages for all necessary information.

I feel pretty foolish: found the "Touchpad detected as PS/2 Mouse Generic Mouse" . However, after carefully reading that section and applying the psmouse-elantech patch, X still sees my touchpad as "ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse". After a little more research, it looks like a kernel bug of some kind.
Can anyone help?

I have the same problem with a Dell Inspiron 15r (n5110)... Iǜe been looking for a solution for over a month and, until this moment, I found nothing... It looks like you also have an Alps touchpad, and Alps won't cooperate with developers, so there's no module built for this piece of hardware... We can use this psmouse-elantech as a patch, but it will take a while until there's some improvement on a specific module for our touchpads
That's it, and sorry for my poor english
