[SOLVED] Once screen goes blank there's no turning back

Hello.

If I let the screensaver to blank my screen, I can't wake it up. The screen doesn't turn off, it just stays blank.
I tried pressing Ctrl + Alt + Backspace, changing to a console with Ctrl + Alt + F1, F2, etc but nothing. I have to power off the laptop or reboot it.
If I lock the screen with Ctrl + Alt + l I get the same result.

I'm not sure what info would you need to diagnose this. Any ideas?

Dell XPS 15
Gnome-shell 3.2

Re: [SOLVED] Once screen goes blank there's no turning back

I don't know if it's related but I had a weird thing the other day. The screen totally locked up and I couldn't free it or switch to a terminal. What I did find was pressing Space and then F3 (which is the Brightness key on my laptop). It happened quite a number of times but I've not used that install for a few days so not sure if it's still happening.

Re: [SOLVED] Once screen goes blank there's no turning back

Wow, that was easy
If I adjust the brightness using the Fn key plus bright up or down I'm back into the light tongue
Still, I wonder how could I solve this in a more elegant and permanent way.

Thank you very much Austin for you tip!

Re: [SOLVED] Once screen goes blank there's no turning back

Oh and by the way, I was wrong about one thing: locking the screen doesn't cause the problem. It only happens if I let the screen saver start (blank screen).

Re: [SOLVED] Once screen goes blank there's no turning back

I am also affected by this problem.

I had this problems on some other distros too; mint11/gnome2, mint12/mate, ubuntu11.10/unity...

Happens on blank screen. My "solution" is to switch to tty2 (nothing happens), then back to tty7, and then i get my picture back

Wild guess - enable acpi in BIOS?

What is your kernel line?

I think ACPI is not the issue here. I did go into bios to check, but I don't have any options related to ACPI (HP bios sad )
here is my dmesg:

Re: [SOLVED] Once screen goes blank there's no turning back

I've got this problem too, and it's had a disasterous result!

In desperation, I switched the power off to recover not realising that pacman was still doing an upgrade (I thought it had  finished). It crashed pacman in the middle of a kernel upgrade, so I now have to do a complete re-installation on my laptop sad

I know it's all my own fault. I suppose one learns by experience!!!

You don't have to reinstall archlinux. Try chroot:

@KAURIN
I though you had acpi or similar line because that was my case. What if you try acpi=off?

Re: [SOLVED] Once screen goes blank there's no turning back

Thanks, Shark.

So far, chroot solutions have not succeeded. Pacman seems to have got its lock confused, and no matter what I do, I can't resolve it (see my other post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=131617)

I'll keep trying, though, before I embark on a re-install.

Shark, I would prefer to have my acpi on because this is a laptop sad

Do you still need me to try it with acpi off?

You could just try it to see if it helps.

Re: [SOLVED] Once screen goes blank there's no turning back

This is a problem introduced in kernel 3.1 if you have an Intel graphics card.  There exists a two-line patch, but kernel 3.1.5 should include it.  Likewise 3.2 should also have the fix.  This is what I'm referring to: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/1215869

Re: [SOLVED] Once screen goes blank there's no turning back

pnutzh4x0r - I have a core i5 CPU which has an integrated GPU within it, however, on boot i get a message that module i915 cannot be loaded (module for that GPU). It is probably because this laptop has a dedicated Nvidia GPU (3100M or M3100, i forgot). I am using that dedicated GPU with nvidia drivers. Repeat: the i915 module cannot even be loaded

Thanks, works now with 3.1.5.
