Can't start Xmonad from GDM

After authenticating via the GDM screen, I get an error: "Failed to load session "xmonad" "

gdm verison is  3.2.1.1
xmonad version 0.9.2

I followed the instructions on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xm … and_xmonad but it did not help

my ~/.xmonad/xmonad.error  file is empty

~/.xsession-errors  is

/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
localuser:mansoor being added to access control list
/etc/gdm/Xsession: ssh-agent not found!
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: gnome-session --session=xmonad
gnome-session[1085]: WARNING: Unable to find default provider 'notification-daemon' of required provider 'notifications'
gnome-session[1085]: WARNING: Unable to find required component 'gnome-panel'

Any ideas on why it won't start up xmonad?
