Camera Automounts But I Can't Access Images

I've been plugging away at Arch Linux for a bit now in an attempt to get to know Linux better.  I've ran into a problem that I can't seem to figure out.  Current configuration is Openbox with Thunar as my volume manager.

I've gotten automount to work and it detects USB sticks just fine.  I can plug in my Nikon camera and it autodetects.

I'm using a small photo management program called Mirage for the time being till I get things sorted out.  I can set Thunar to access Mirage whenever a camera is plugged in.  Whenever I plug the Nikon in, Mirage pops up, but then I get a root access error ("could not access the contents of root, Access Denied") when I try to access images.

I've followed the wiki here.  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Digital_Cameras with no luck.

Here's my lsusb

Ultimately it looks like my user is not authorized for the camera group, or the camera is not setting up under the camera group.  I'm missing something somewhere.  I know I added the user to the camera group.

Re: Camera Automounts But I Can't Access Images

Okay, I went ahead and plugged in my Pentax DSLR camera and it mounts in Thunar under "Kingston" (which is the SD card installed in the camera).

I get a "failed to mount" error with this one.

So, with the Nikon I get a "can't access root, not authorized" error, and with the Pentax I get a "failed to mount" error.

How do you start Openbox ?

Please disconnect, then reconnect your camera -- then immediately post the output of dmesg | tail -20

Here's my .xinitrc file

nitrogen --restore &
tint2 &
exec dbus-launch openbox-session

I tried using console kit but that killed any attempt at mounting drives period.  The last post I made was with console kit placed prior to my dbus-launch in .xinitrc.  So, that's fixed.  I can actually read my Pentax camera.  I can't read the Nikon.  So it's definitely Nikon specific.

Re: Camera Automounts But I Can't Access Images

Is there a chance that the Nikon is in PTP or MTP mode ?  To work as a USB mass storage device, it should be in MSC mode.

Re: Camera Automounts But I Can't Access Images

ewaller, you solved my problem!

My Nikon Coolpix L20 works in PTP mode and I had to install gvfs-gphoto2;  libgphoto2 and libptp2 did not solve it without gvfs-gphoto2.  My file-mgr pcmanfm now can access the Nikon and transfer photos.  Thanks.

Re: Camera Automounts But I Can't Access Images

Too answer your question ewaller, the camera only operates in P2P mode.  There is no way to change it on the camera.

gvfs-gphoto2 did the trick though.  At least for PCMan File Manager.  Thunar still doesn't see it and if Thunar opens Mirage, Mirage sees it, but can't open it.  I'll play around a bit with PCManFM for a bit.  Not married to any particular file manager at this point.

Anyway, I was able to pull an image from the camera and open it with GIMP.  The battle's almost won.
